Women's Basketball Posts Big Win Over CSUN

Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball came away with a commanding 71-39 win over CSUN Tuesday night from Leavey Center. The Broncos' defense was stifling and their shooters were hot from downtown in a game that they controlled from the first quarter on.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara (3-1) scored the first 17 points of the night while holding CSUN (2-1) to 0-for-15 from the floor. The Broncos connected on five 3-pointers in the period with two coming from Tess Heal and one each from Olivia Pollerd, Marya Hudgins, and Ashley Hiraki.
  • The second quarter saw the lead stretch out to 20 for the first time with a 13-3 run over six minutes with Heal and Hiraki again knocking down shots from beyond the arc.
  • The Broncos got out in front by 30 late in the third with a 10-2 run and would build a game-high lead of 36 with an 8-0 stretch in the fourth, capped by Pollerd's triple.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara's defense held CSUN to just 28.1-percent from the floor and 3-for-21 from beyond the arc.
  • The Broncos forced 19 turnovers and picked up 12 steals.
  • On offense, Santa Clara connected on 11 3-pointers, one more than they made in their first three games combined.
  • They assisted on 20 of their 24 made field goals.
  • The Broncos won the battle of the boards 52-34 and 16-7 on the offensive glass. They turned that into 17 second chance points while allowing just two.
  • They also dominated in bench points 35-13.
  • Tess Heal led all scorers with 19 points and added five assists.
  • Both Hudgins and Pollerd finished the night with double-doubles. Hudgins scored 14 with a game-high 11 rebounds and Pollerd had 10 and 10.
  • No Matador had more than Kaitlyn Elsholz and Amiyah Ferguson's seven points. K Spriggs led the team with 10 rebounds.
