Broncos Hold off SLU for Fourth Straight Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball picked up a thrilling win, the fourth of the season, beating SLU 65-63. Christoph Tilly was the single Bronco with a double digit scoring game (20). 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The starting five were #15 Jalen Benjamin, #4 Ball, #22 Carlos Marshall Jr., #14 Johnny O'Neil, and #13 Tilly. 

  • The Broncos had a hot start with an early 9-0 lead, however, SLU used a 17-6 run to ran the majority of the final nine minutes of action to grab the lead. Christoph Tilly hit a late jumper to end the scoring spree and make it a four-point game at 30-26 at the intermission. 

  • Jalen Benjamin led the Broncos with eight points in the opening half. 

  • The second half was back-and fourth affair with 11 lead changes. The Broncos grabbed a 61-60 advantage on a Francisco Caffaro go ahead jumper with 3:45 to play. 

  • SLU drew a foul and converted on their free throw attempts to grab a one point lead with just under three minutes to play, however Tilly scored a jumper of his own on the ensuing possession to give the Broncos the advantage right back at 63-62. The Lions once again drew a foul and went to the charity stripe looking to grab the lead, however they missed the back end of their two tries, resulting in a 63-63 tie with 2:00 to play. 

  • Inside the final minute, it was once again Tilly who came up huge as he knocked down what would prove to be the game winning score with a jumper inside the paint to make it 65-63. The Bronco defense in clamp down and held off the Lions final attempts to preserve the win. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Tilly finished with a  career-high 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting. It was his first double-figure scoring outing of the season. He also set a new career high in assists (5) and steals (6). 

  • Marshall Jr. had a relatively quiet night offensive with seven points, but he was huge on the boards with a team-high 10 rebounds, with eight off the defensive glass. 

  • Bal and Benjamin finished with 9 pts, while Francisco chipped in eight of his own. 

  • The Broncos held SLU to 34 percent shooting while shooting 51 percent themselves. It is their second game shooting better than 50 percent on the season. 

  • Santa Clara was out-rebounded for the first time this season, 31-29. 

  • The Broncos scored 38 of their 65 points inside the paint. 

  • Santa Clara has had at least one player score 20 points in all four games this season.
