Winning Streak Ends for Women's Basketball

Box Score LAS VEGAS – Santa Clara women's basketball's five game winning streak came to an end with a 61-56 loss to Texas Tech at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. The Broncos were on top at the break but a big fourth quarter for the Red Raiders proved to be the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The teams were even at 14 after one period with Santa Clara (6-2) taking a five-point lead into halftime thanks to a 7-0 run to begin the second quarter.
  • Neither team did much in the third with the Red Raiders (7-0) scoring nine points to the Broncos seven. For the period, Texas Tech shot 26.7-percent while Santa Clara was at 25.0-percent.
  • A layup by Loghan Johnson at the 7:28 mark in the fourth broke a tie and gave Texas Tech the lead for good. The teams went back and forth the rest of the period. The Red Raiders got their lead up to five but Tess Heal scored the next four to get the Broncos with 57-56 with 19 second to go. That was as close as it would get as Texas Tech made four free throws over the final seconds to ice the game.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  •  Santa Clara shot 44.4-percent from the field while going 5-of-16 from deep. Uncharacteristically, the Broncos struggled from the free throw line, going just 11-for-19. They entered the game shooting 83.2-percent from the charity stripe.
  • Texas Tech shot the ball at a 42.6-percent clip while going 3-of-13 from deep. The Red Raiders didn't shoot well from the free throw line either, going 12-of-20.
  • Tess Heal led all scorers with 18 points and was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe while dishing out six of the team's 11 assists. Olivia Pollerd scored 13, 11 in the first half, on 5-of-8 shooting and connected on three 3-pointers.
  • Bailey Maupin was the only Texas Tech player in double-figures with 11 and she added seven assists and six rebounds. Ten of the 11 Red Raiders to play scored in the game to lead a balanced offensive attack.

NEXT UP
  • The Broncos play at Sacramento State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
