Fourth Quarter Run Gives Women's Basketball Comeback Win on the Road

Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A huge fourth quarter run lifted Santa Clara women's basketball to a 70-65 win at Sacramento State on Wednesday night. The Broncos found themselves down most of the second half as the Hornets couldn't miss from beyond the arc all game but it wasn't enough as Santa Clara's own 3-pointers helped them seal the victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing by eight with 7:53 left in the fourth after yet another Sacramento State (0-6) triple, Santa Clara (7-2) responded by scoring the next 17 points to flip the game. Tess Heal, who didn't score in the first half, got hot with 11 of the points, including knocking down three from long range.
  • The Hornets didn't back down and came right back with eight in a row, including two more 3-pointers, to get within one at 64-63 with 1:48 left.
  • Marya Hudgins and Olivia Pollerd both connected from downtown in the final 90 seconds to keep the Broncos on top.
  • Santa Clara got off to a good start, scoring the first seven points of the game and jumping out to an 18-6 lead. Sacramento State stayed in it thanks to going 4-of-5 from deep and ending the quarter on a 6-0 run.
  • The Hornets stayed hot from the field in the second quarter, going 5-of-9, including knocking down both attempts from downtown, while the Broncos struggled in the period at 4-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-12 from 3-point range which made it a one-point game at half.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  •  Santa Clara shot 47.2-percent from the field and hit 15 3-pointers in 36 attempts, including 7-of-11 in the fourth quarter.
  • Sacramento State ended up going a scorching 12-of-16 from beyond the arc and shot 56.8-percent from the floor for the game.
  • Olivia Pollerd led all scorers with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 4-of-6 from downtown. She also added a career-high seven assists, tied with Heal for the team lead. Heal ended up with 13 on the night and Hudgins scored 12 on four 3-pointers.
  • Solape Amusan led the Hornets with 18 and was 6-of-7 from deep. Benthe Verteeg had a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists with Summah Hanson adding 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
  • Santa Clara grabbed nine offensive boards and held a 17-5 edge in second chance points.
  • The Broncos had 22 assists on their 25 made field goals.
  • They forced 21 turnovers that they turned into 20 points.
