SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball had one of their finest 3-point shooting performances in school history on Wednesday evening, connecting on 17-of-29 attempts from beyond the arc to blow past Menlo, 106-69, and improve to 7-1 on the season. The 17 treys are tied for the second-most in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Broncos jumped out to a 17-4 lead at the first media timeout of the night and extended the lead to 24 before Menlo (8-2) used an 11-0 run to knock the deficit to 13 at 37-24 with 6:20 to play in the half.
- Santa Clara quickly got back in form with an 11-0 run of their own to push the lead back up to 26, and went into the locker room up 21 at 56-35.
- The Broncos knocked down nine 3-pointers on 64.3 percent shooting (9-of-14) and shot 62.9 percent for the half overall. Jalen Benjamin led the way individually with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
- The good shooting continued in the second half as Santa Clara knocked down eight more treys and was 17-of-36 overall from the floor.
- Santa Clara led by no less than 23 points for the entirety of the second half as they cruised to the victory.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Five players scored in double figures - the second time that has happened this season (Utah Tech) - with Benjamin leading the way with a season-best 16 points.
- Carlos Marshall, Jr., turned in the seventh double-figure scoring performance of the year with 15 points while Adama-Alpha Bal and Tyeree Bryan each finished with 13 points.
- Camaron Tongue chipped in a season-high 10 points and seven rebounds from off the bench and Jake Ensiminger matched his career high of nine points.
- Benjamin, Marshall, Bal and Bryan each finished with at least three treys in the rout.
- The 58.6 3-point shooting percentage is the Santa Clara's best mark of the season.
- The Broncos shot 54.9 percent overall (39-of-71) - their fourth game of the year shooting 50 percent or better.
- Santa Clara's 106 points are their highest scoring total since Nov. 10, 2017 when the Broncos dropped 120 points on La Verne.
- It's the first time Santa Clara has scored 100 or more points since dropping 103 at Portland last season (2/18/23).
