SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball is set to open the 2023-24 season this Wednesday against Utah Tech. Tipoff from the Leavey Center is set for 7:00 p.m. PT.
The Broncos, under eighth-year head coach Herb Sendek, are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and third-place finishes in the WCC, as well as consecutive appearances in the National Invitation Tournament.
Santa Clara will feature a crop of new faces in 2023-24 with eight newcomers joining the squad in the offseason. Among that group is transfers Adama-Alpha Bal (Arizona), Jalen Benjamin (Mount St. Mary's), Tyeree Bryan (Charleston Southern), Francisco Caffaro (Virginia) and Johnny O'Neil (American University).
While the Broncos will need to replace the entirety of last season's starting lineup (including 19th overall NBA Draft pick Brandin Podziemski and All-WCC forward Keshawn Justice), a few familiar faces return once again in bigs Christoph Tilly and Camaron Tongue, and guards Carlos Marshall Jr., Brenton Knapper and Kosy Akametu. Marshall Jr., returns after missing all but three games due to injury in 2022-23.
Wednesday will be the first meeting between the Trailblazers of Utah Tech and the Broncos. Utah Tech is led by 19th-year head coach Jon Judkins and features a brand new roster of their own with 10 newcomers on the roster.
