No. 19 Women's Soccer Beats San Jose State to Begin 2023 Campaign

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 19 Santa Clara women's soccer opened the season with a strong performance in a 2-1 win over San Jose State on Thursday night. The score line didn't dictate the level of control the Broncos had over the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Makoto Nezu started the scoring on a header off a pass from Alex Klos in the 14th minute. It was her third career goal and first not in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Holly Furphy, who was returning from an ACL injury suffered in the fifth game of the 2022 season, scored her first career goal in the 31st minute off assists from Karly Reeves and Sally Menti, who was also back for the first time since suffering an ACL injury during the 2022 preseason.
  • The Spartans score their goal in the 54th minute off the foot of Taylor St. Phillips on a loose ball in front of the goal after a free kick.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara (1-0) outshot San Jose State (0-1) 28-6 and 14-2 in shots on goal.
  • The Broncos also drew 11 corners while surrendering three.
  • Spartan keeper Bente Pernot came up with 11 saves. Marlee Nicolos had one for the Broncos.
  • Santa Clara now leads the all-time series 21-0.
