No. 13 Women's Soccer Roars Past Huskies on the Road

SEATTLE – Santa Clara women's soccer kept its offense hot and went on the road to beat Washington 5-1 on Thursday afternoon. The Broncos fell behind early but scored five unanswered goals to make it a blowout in the end.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Despite not having a chance for the first 13 minutes, the Huskies (1-1-1) got a header off a corner, their first shot of the match, from Lucy Newlin in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Broncos (3-0) evened things in the 24th on the first in the career of senior Rachel Bastone, also off a corner. Sally Menti sent a ball near the six-yard box that Bastone headed inside the near post.
  • Santa Clara then took the lead in the 37th. Farrah Walters got the ball to Leah O'Brien to set up a one-on-three with the keeper. O'Brien tapped a pass to Jordyn Crosby who was able to knock it in.
  • Menti got a goal of her own in the 70th minute. Karly Reeves got taken down in the box and Menti converted the PK.
  • Farrah Walters closed out the scoring with a pair of goals. In the 70th, she took a pass from Klos and made a beautiful touch and turn before beating the keeper.
  • She made it a brace in the 79th after taking a long pass from goalkeeper Marlee Nicolos and finding the back of the net.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara held a 17-7 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on target.
  • The Broncos also drew nine corners and allowed three. They have had at least six more corners than their opponent in each of the first three matches.
  • Marlee Nicolos ended up with a pair of saves while Washington goalkeeper Olivia Juarez made three.
HIGHLIGHTS:

  • "I was disappointed to give up the first goal but am very happy to score five goals. It's not easy in our sport to score five goals and to do it on the road against a Power 5 team is a good day for us. We played all of our healthy field players and I thought they all played well. It's a good sign for us that early in the year we're getting so many people on the scoresheet." Head coach Jerry Smith
