Volleyball Sweeps Jacksonville to Stay Unbeaten

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Santa Clara University volleyball team continued its hot start to 2023 Saturday by making quick work of Jacksonville University, sweeping the Dolphins, 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19), at San Jose State's Spartan Gym on the second day of the Santa Clara/SJSU Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Broncos (3-0) took off in the first set, jumping out to a 17-7 lead and never looking back. The Santa Clara defense stifled the Dolphins (1-2) with three blocks and 13 digs in the first set alone.
  • The offense did the rest of the work in sets two and three. The Broncos totaled 33 kills and hit .472 over the last two sets. They hit .519 in the second and .423 in the third, finishing with a .416 hitting percentage for the match.
  • Jacksonville had an opportunity to tie the match at 1-1 in the second. The Dolphins led 22-19, but the Broncos responded by going on a 6-1 set-winning run. Two kills and a solo block from Oren Abutbul powered the run to give Santa Clara a 25-23 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • Santa Clara never trailed in the third set on its way to a 3-0 match sweep. Jacksonville got to within one point at 8-7, but a 9-4 Santa Clara stretch put it ahead at 17-11 and all but sealed the match.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 6: Five Broncos had at least six kills, with four of them hitting .316 or better.
  • 9: Santa Clara had nine service aces as a team. Sophia Tulino led all players with three.
  • 10: Abutbul led all players with 10 kills. She had no errors for a .625 hitting percentage and also added four blocks.
POSTGAME COMMENTS
  • Head Coach Erin Lindsey
I am really proud of how the team showed up this morning really ready to go after a tough day yesterday with two matches. We did a nice job of taking care of the controlables and really finding our right side attackers. We also put a ton of pressure on their passers from the service line.
