No. 13 Women's Soccer Upset at San Francisco

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – A flurry of goals early in the second half led to a 3-0 upset of No. 13 Santa Clara by San Francisco on Thursday night in a nonconference match. The Broncos held the Dons without a shot in the first half, but the first three of the second all found the back of the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • San Francisco (3-5-2) broke the scoring open with three goals in in under four minutes early in the second half. A Santa Clara giveaway led to the first goal by Alex Carpio in the 51st. In the 53rd, Jackie Koerwitz got a bouncing ball to come down at her feet in the box and finished far post. Carpio then sent a perfect pass to the head of Ellie Weissenberg in the 55th to cap the run.
  • Santa Clara's (6-2-2) offense turned up the pressure to try and get back in it but the Dons' defense was up to the challenge.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • The Broncos had the majority of the chances and held a 13-3 advantage in shots but only put three of theirs on frame while San Francisco put each three of their shots in the net.
  • Santa Clara also drew nine corners while not surrendering any.
  • This was the first time all year the Broncos had given up more than one goal.

NEXT UP
  • The Broncos host Pacific Sunday in the final game of the nonconference schedule.
