Men's Soccer Downs CSUN in Final Tuneup Before League Play

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Goalkeeper Jack Stoecker recorded a shutout and an own goal in the 67th minute proved to be the difference in Santa Clara men's soccer's 1-0 victory over CSUN on Sunday afternoon as the program celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the 2003 National Semifinalist team.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (2-5-2) scored first for the fourth-straight game, this time on an own goal, and held on to pick up their second win of the season.
  • In the 67th minute, Brennan Mallett played the ball into the box that deflected off the CSUN defender's head into his own goal as he and goalkeeper Cooper Wenzel both went for the ball.
  • The Broncos outshot the Matadors (2-3-4), by almost a 2-to-1 margin at 15-8.
  • SCU also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • 1: The own goal was the first of its kind scored by Santa Clara this fall.
  • 2: Stoecker recorded his second career shutout making three saves.
  • 8: For the first time this season, the Broncos did not make a lineup change as they utilized the same lineup from Thursday's draw against CSU Bakersfield. Eight different lineup combinations have been used in nine total matches this season.
