SAN ANTONIO – Adem Hamdaoua scored a pair of second half goals within a three minute span to lift Santa Clara men's soccer to a 2-1 comeback win over Incarnate Word on a hot and muggy Thursday evening at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium. The win was the first of the year for the Broncos (1-3) snapping a three-game losing streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Hamdaoua scored in the 72nd and 75th minute with long range shots past Incarnate Word's (1-3-1) goalkeeper Hugo Constant.
- The equalizer came on a free kick from just outside the 18. Constant got his fingers on it but the beautifully struck ball found the back of the net in the upper right 90.
- The game-winning goal beat Constant from 26 yards out as Hamdaoua curved the ball past the diving goalkeeper to the far post after receiving the pass from Caden Buckley.
- For the first time since the season opener, the Broncos conceded the first goal of the game. Francisco Segura settled down the corner kick from Cesar Elizalde on the far post and blasted it past goalkeeper Felix Schaefer high in the seventh minute to put Incarnate Word up 1-0.
- The Broncos had two good looks in the first half. Midway through the half, Pierce Dyal's left-footed shot from outside the box just went over the crossbar. And five minutes before intermission, Timmy Rast's header attempt sailed high over the bar.
- UIW held a 1-0 lead at the half.
- Santa Clara turned up the pressure in the second half with nine shots including five on goal compared to four shots and three on frame for UIW.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- 3: Hamdaoua's brace was his third of his career but first as a Bronco. The second year Bronco transferred from Drury where he had two games scoring a brace.
- 6: Schaefer was credited with six saves, just one off his career-high.
- Itamar Efrat started his first game as a Bronco after making his debut off in the last game.
POST-GAME COMMENTS:
Head Coach Cam Rast on tonight's win:
"With a new group like we have, even if we played some games together in England during our Foreign Tour, it's hard to win regular season games. There's a curve to it. We didn't start off well tonight but we were still able to create a couple of moments that we were able to take advantage of. So rather than focusing on the outcome of the game, today was about learning to win a game and what it takes to win.
On Hamdaoua's goals:
"Adem's been looking for his moments. The goal on the free kick was super well taken. And the second goal is where he got himself free and was able to sink it. It's great that we have someone that wants to make a difference off the bench and it gives us confidence to see what we can do when he enters the game."
On the playing conditions:
"It was a difficult condition with the 100 degree weather and high humidity playing on a small turf field. Tomorrow we will transfer from San Antonio to Houston for our next game and take the rest of the day off to recover. Then we'll train on Saturday to get ready for Sunday's game."
NEXT UP:
- The Broncos remain in Texas and travel to Houston for a Sunday night match against Houston Christian at 5 p.m. PT.
