Women's Basketball Topped at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Santa Clara women's basketball dropped its game at Portland by a final of 73-63 Saturday evening. The Pilots were on fire for most of the first half and built a lead that the Broncos couldn't overcome.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A 15-3 run in the midway through the first quarter put Portland (11-7, 3-1 WCC) on top for good. The Pilots would then use a 9-0 run in the second to stretch their lead to 36-19 at the 5:51 mark.
  • Santa Clara (13-5, 1-2 WCC) managed to get within seven at the 6:37 mark of the fourth quarter with the help of a 6-0 run but Portland had an answer with back-to-back 3-pointers.
  • Down the stretch, the Pilots hit their free throw as the Broncos attempt at a comeback fell short.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Portland finished the night at 51.9-percent from the floor. They started the game 16-of-24 to build their lead.
  • Santa Clara shot 40.0-percent from the floor but struggled from downtown, going 5-of-22.
  • Emme Shearer led the Pilots with 15 points and four assists. Maisie Burnham added 14 points and Dyani Ananiev scored 10.
  • Tess Heal had a game-high 19 points with 14 coming in the fourth quarter as she tried to bring her team back. Keeley Frawley just missed a double-double with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds with Olivia Pollerd scoring 10 on a tough 3-of-14 day shooting it.
