SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresh off a 19-point victory over Pacific, Santa Clara men's basketball returns to the Leavey Center to take on Portland in a 4:00 p.m. PT showdown that will serve as the back half of doubleheader with the Bronco women's team. Anthony Passarelli and Henry Caruso will have the call live on ESPN+.
The Broncos picked up their third road win of WCC play on Thursday by taking down Pacific 88-69 in Stockton. Every player that saw the court scored at least four points in the victory, headlined by a career-best 23 points for Johnny O'Neil. O'Neil had a particularly memorable night, knocking down 6-of-10 from 3-point range (career high), dished out a season-high four assists and pulled down seven rebounds. His fifth board of the night gave him 500 for his career.
Santa Clara (13-7, 4-1) allowed just 21 rebounds against the Tigers, including just three off the offensive glass, and finished the game with a 37-21 advantage on the boards. The Broncos also knocked down 15 treys on a season-high 39 attempts - their fifth game of the year with 10 or triples, and second-most of the year (17 vs. Menlo).
Portland (7-11, 1-2) is averaging 72.8 points per game and allowing 79.0 ppg defensively. Led by third-year head coach Shantay Legans, the Pilots are among the top 3-point shooting teams in the WCC with 8.3 treys per game, and put up more shots from beyond the arc than anyone in the league at 25.2 attempts per game. Four Pilots are averaging 10.0 ppg or more led by 15.9 from Tyler Robertson (third in WCC). Freshman Tyler Harris has been outstanding in his debut season, averaging 12.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Santa Clara is looking to extend their win streak over the Pilots to 16-straight and lead the all-time series 73-33, including a 38-9 record in Santa Clara.
