SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's basketball came out the right side of an offensive shootout, running away in the second half to take down Portland by a final score of 101-86 inside the Leavey Center on Saturday evening. Six Broncos scored in double figures, including all five starters, as Santa Clara turned in their second-best shooting performance of the season with a 55.1 percent mark from the field. The Broncos improved to 5-1 in WCC play and are 14-7 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both teams started hot out of the gate with Portland knocking down seven of their first eight 3-pointers while the Broncos started out 7-for-12 from beyond the arc.
- The Pilots (7-12, 1-3) grabbed their first lead of the night on a 13-2 run to make it 30-27 midway through the half. However, Santa Clara punched back and grabbed the lead for good following back-to-back field goals from Johnny O'Neil and Christoph Tilly with 3:10 to play. The Broncos went into the half up 45-41.
- Tilly led the team in the first half, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to tally 11 points . He also recorded five rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
- Santa Clara shot 51.5 from the field in the opening half. Portland scored the majority of their points from the three-point range, going 10-for-17.
- The Broncos quickly widened the gap with an 11-2 run to put them up by 11 at 65-54. Portland was able to work the deficit down to as little as five with just under 10 minutes to play, but Tyeree Bryan, who finished the night with a career-high six treys, knocked down an open look to regain the momentum.
- Santa Clara maintained no less than a seven-point advantage for the remainder of the night, leading by as much as 15 at the final buzzer.
- The Broncos finished the game 38-of-69 from the field (55.1), knocked down 16-of-39 from 3-point range, outrebounded the Pilots 39-24, and dished out a season-high 28 assists.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Santa Clara's 16 3-pointers is tied for the 5th most all time in program history and is the most against a WCC opponent since Feb. 18, 2023, also against the Pilots in Portland.
- Tilly finished with a career-high 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, eight rebounds and four assists.
- Bryan, making his second-straight start, finished with a season-high 18 points with all six of his field goals coming from beyond the arc. He also pulled down four rebounds.
- Adama-Alpha Bal scored 15 points, all but two coming in the final 20 minutes, while just missing out on a double-double with a career-high nine assists.
- Carlos Marshall Jr. finished with 16 points for his 15th double-digit scoring game of the season.
- Jake Ensminger also had a career-best game with highs in points (10) and rebounds (8).
- O'Neil, coming off his career-best outing against Pacific, finished with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds to go with four assists for the second-consecutive game.
- Portland was carried by Tyle Robertson who finished with his season-high 34 points.
- This is the second time that Santa Clara has scored 100 or more this season, and their first against a WCC team since, you guessed it, Portland last season.
- The Broncos extended their win streak over the Pilots to 16-straight.
