De Simon Earns Second WCC Newcomer of the Week Award

Riccardo De Simon earned his second WCC Newcomer of the Week award Tuesday.
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Santa Clara University men's water polo freshman utility man Riccardo De Simon earned another weekly award Tuesday, being named the KAP7 West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Week for the second time, this time for the week of Sept. 23-29 after helping lead the Broncos to a milestone road victory at No. 13 UC Davis.

De Simon did it all Friday for then-No. 18 Santa Clara, scoring one goal, tallying a team-high three assists on three other goals, grabbing four steals, recording three field blocks on defense and also drawing two exclusions to help lead the Broncos to a historic 14-12 win on the road at then-No. 13-ranked UC Davis. It was the Broncos' first win over the Aggies in 13 years (since 2011), and also marked head coach Keith Wilbur's 300th career victory with the Santa Clara men's program.

De Simon was part of an SCU offensive surge in Friday's second period that put them up by multiple goals. His lone goal of the game made it 3-1 at the time, and he later assisted on the Broncos' next goal to make it 4-2. He also assisted on the go-ahead goal in the third, which made it 8-7.

De Simon was also named the WCC Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 17 after scoring 11 goals in four games at the Princeton Invitational, helping carry the Broncos to their best showing (3-1) at the tournament in six years.

De Simon and the Broncos head across town on Saturday for two neutral site games at San Jose State in the Big West/WCC Challenge. There, they'll have a rematch against UC Davis in the morning and face UC Santa Barbara in the afternoon.
