Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

No. 18 Broncos Make Late Charge at No. 9 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. — The No. 18 Santa Clara University men's water polo team's late charge ran out of time Friday. The Broncos scored three unanswered goals to pull within one of host No. 9 Pepperdine before the clock ran out and gave the Waves a narrow, 11-10, West Coast Conference victory at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Julien Chow, Zach Fales and Reese Jenican each scored goals in the final 3 minutes, 41 seconds of the game to bring the No. 18 Broncos (11-8, 0-3 WCC) within one goal. The defense also lent a hand during that stretch, forcing four turnovers to get themselves back into the game.

  • No. 9 Pepperdine (18-6, 3-0 WCC) had at least five separate four-goal leads throughout Friday's game, including two in the fourth period alone (10-6 and 11-7). That didn't stop the Broncos from battling all the way to the end.

  • Santa Clara had an opportunity to tie the game at 3-3 with a penalty shot in the second period, but Waves goalkeeper Max Smirnov made the save. The save sent the Waves on a three-goal run, flipping what could've been a tie game into a four-goal lead for Pepperdine at 6-2.

  • Three different Waves turned in multi-goal performances, led by Christian Hosea's four goals. Gojko Kapovic led three multiple goal scorers for the Broncos with three of his own. Chow and Henry Engs both scored two goals each.

  • Harrison Labrosse made 12 saves in goal for Santa Clara. That included a point-blank save at the end of the first half to keep the game at a two-score contest with the Waves leading, 6-4, at the time.
