No. 18 Men's Water Polo Stifles No. 17 LMU on the Road

LOS ANGELES — The No. 18 Santa Clara University men's water polo team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back Saturday, earning its first West Coast Conference win of the year with a 13-9 triumph over No. 17 LMU at Burns Aquatics Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Zach Fales was unstoppable for the No. 18 Broncos (12-8, 1-3 WCC), scoring a game-high six goals, including all four of Santa Clara's first period goals to get them out to an early 4-2 lead.

  • Riccardo De Simon took over in the second period, scoring all four of his goals in those eight minutes to increase the Broncos' lead to 10-4 at the break.

  • Luke Baird and Henry Engs also added to the scoreboard with two goals and one goal, respectively. LMU's Josiah Yeager scored the first goal of the game and that was the only time the Lions (9-12, 0-4 WCC) held a lead in the game.

  • Santa Clara's victory snapped a five-game win streak in the series for LMU, and marked the first time the Broncos beat the Lions in Los Angeles since 2015, a stretch of nine years and 15 games.

  • LMU's offense was led by Abel Romero Corbalan, who netted four goals. Roman Saroyan followed with two goals, while Richie Rimlinger, Baptiste Oliveri, and Josiah Yeager each contributed one goal.

  • Santa Clara scored four goals in the first quarter, followed by six in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth. In contrast, LMU tallied two goals in the first, two in the second, four in the third, and only one in the final quarter.

  • Harrison Labrosse made 13 saves for Santa Clara, after making 12 on Friday at Pepperdine, giving him 25 for the weekend. LMU's Stelios Dalmaras recorded five saves.
COMING UP
  • The Broncos' four-game road trip continues next weekend in Northern California with away contests at No. 5 Pacific on Friday and No. 2 Stanford on Saturday. Fans can find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
