The Broncos saw a wealth of scoring in their first contest of the season with five players recording double figures in points. Santa Clara was led by senior guard Adama-Alpha Bal with 24 points, his tenth 20 point game of his career. Senior forward Camaron Tongue added a career high 18 points, while junior center Christoph Tilly made a career high two three pointers contributing to 17 points and matching a career high eight rebounds.
Newcomer junior forward Elijah Mahi was impressive in his Broncos debut going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and contributing 10 points off the bench. Junior guard Tyeree Bryan added 12 points, shooting 4-7 from three, and senior guard Carlos Stewart Jr. matched a career high five assists in his first game back in a Bronco uniform.
Arizona State started the season 1-0 with a 55-48 win over Idaho State on Tuesday. Alston Mason scored 14 to lead the Sun Devils on a night where they struggled to find much offensive production (36.4 shooting percentage and 29.7 3-point shooting). Led by Bobby Hurley in his 10th season at the helm, ASU was 14-18 in 2023-24.
Friday’s game will be the eighth meeting all-time between the Broncos and Sun Devils and the first since Dec. 22, 2004. Santa Clara won the first two installments of the series in 1956 and 1957 (both in Santa Clara), but Arizona State has won the last five, including the lone previous meeting on a neutral court (Dec. 14, 1979 in Knoxville, Tenn.).
