Late Run Lifts Women's Basketball at Fresno State

Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – A late run lifted Santa Clara women's basketball to a 67-61 road win at Fresno State Saturday afternoon. Down five with under three minutes to go, the Broncos (2-0) scored the game's final 11 points to put the Bulldogs (1-1) away.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A quick start had the Broncos up 7-2 early on behind back-to-back jumpers by Olivia Pollerd. The teams would go back and forth the rest of the period with Maddie Naro's triple in the waning seconds making it 20-16 at the first break.
  • Fresno State took the lead with back-to-back 3-pointers to start the second quarter and retook the lead late with four straight points to head into the locker room up 28-26.
  • With the game tied in the third, the Bulldogs scored seven in a row to take a game-high lead of 39-32 with 5:57 on the clock. Pollerd went off and scored the Broncos next 15 points, highlighted by four 3-pointers. Her fourth tied the game and Hannah Rapp's two free throws gave Santa Clara a two-point lead headed to the final period.
  • Seven in a row for Fresno State put Santa Clara in a 54-49 hole with seven-and-a-half minutes to go and the lead would be five again at the 2:53 mark but the Bulldogs wouldn't score again. The Broncos went on an 11-0 game-ending run, with Pollerd scoring five more, including another triple to put them in front for good with 1:17 left.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  •  Santa Clara shot 42.4-percent (25-of-59) from the floor and were 7-of-14 from downtown.
  • Fresno State shot just 30.6-percent (22-of-72) from the field and was 7-of-29 from beyond the arc.
  • Pollerd led all scorers with a career-high 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting and 6-of-9 from 3-point land. Kaya Ingram added 15 points with Georgia Grigoropoulou pulling down a team-high eight rebounds with five points and Maddie Naro scoring six with six assists.
  • Mia Jacobs scored 25 on 8-of-21 shooting but was held to 2-of-9 from deep for the Bulldogs. The only other player in double-figures was Saga Ukkonen who scored 10. Jacobs also had a game-high nine rebounds.
