Women's Water Polo Concludes Bronco Invitational with Loss to Brown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -  Santa Clara women's water polo team concluded the Bronco Invitational with a match against Brown (5-5) that didn't end in their favor. Chloe Morrison and Sydney Maccabe led the team with two goals each, wrapping up the weekend with a 2-2 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (4-5, 1-0) got off to a strong start, with Maddie Clough assisting Elle Fredrickson's goal just 20 seconds into the game. However, Brown quickly responded with four goals of their own, leading 4-1 until Maccabe scored from a penalty shot. By the end of the first period, Brown was ahead 5-2.

  •  In the second period, despite Brown's offensive success, the Broncos struggled to score until freshman Evelyn Mclaughlin narrowed the gap to 8-3. Mila Erceg added another goal, leaving the Broncos trailing by four at halftime.

  • Early in the third period, both teams scored again, with Maccabe adding to Santa Clara's tally. However, the Broncos remained behind, with the score at 12-7 by the end of the third period.

  • The fourth period saw tight defense from both sides, with no action for the first three minutes. Maccabe assisted Morrison for her second goal of the day, but it would be the Broncos' final effort, ending the game at 14-8 in Brown's favor.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:

  • Liyara Senadheera started in goal and recorded 10 saves.

  • Clough led with two assists, continuing to find her teammates effectively.

  • Maccabe went 3-3 on the sprint, providing crucial opportunities for the Broncos' offense.

  • Despite their efforts, the Broncos were out-shot 24 to 34 by Brown, which proved to be a significant factor in the game.

  • Mclaughlin recorded her fourth goal in her young collegiate career.
