Heal Scores 30 To Lead Women's Basketball To Seventh Win in a Row

Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Tess Heal put up 30 points to lead Santa Clara women's basketball to its seventh straight win with a 66-57 victory over San Diego on the road. The Broncos held a double-digit lead at the half but the Toreros battled back multiple times to keep things interesting until the final seconds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a back-and-forth start that saw San Diego (7-19, 3-10 WCC) on top 14-12, Santa Clara (22-7, 10-4 WCC) scored the next nine to get out on top and would hold a 21-16 lead after the opening period.
  • The Broncos then stretched their lead even further with a 10-2 run over the first six minutes of the second quarter. At the end of the first half, Santa Clara had a comfortable 36-24 lead.
  • Santa Clara had its lead up to a game-high 16 at the midway point of the third but San Diego responded with 10 in a row to get within six. The Broncos finished the period with the final five to take a 50-39 lead.
  • The Toreros immediately cut their deficit to six again with the first five points of the fourth before Santa Clara went on a 6-0 run to get back up double-figures. San Diego came right back with nine in a row and made it a 58-54 game with just 2:12 to go. The Toreros would score just three more points from that point as Santa Clara hit its free throws to ice the win.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Neither team had a great day shooting the ball with Santa Clara finishing at 39.1-percent from the field and San Diego at 33.9-percent. The big difference was the Toreros were 9-of-15 from deep while the Broncos struggled at 5-of-22 from beyond the arc.
  • Santa Clara made up for the 3-point shooting by having a big advantage down low, holding a 36-16 edge in points in the paint.
  • The Broncos also had a 19-7 lead in bench points.
  • Heal finished the night 11-of-19 from the field and added eight rebounds and four assists in her second 30-point performance of the season. It was also her third game in a row with at least 24 points. Marya Hudgins was the only other Bronco in double-figures with 10. Both Keeley Frawley and Olivia Pollerd had seven rebounds.
  • Four Toreros were in double-digits led by Kylie Horstmeyer's 12. D Horton and Veronica Sheffey both scored 11 and Kasey Neubert had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

NEXT UP
