LAS VEGAS – The Santa Clara softball team got off to a strong start on the first day at the UNLV Rebel Classic Tournament with a pair of wins - a 6-0 shutout over Southern Utah and a 7-6 comeback victory over host, UNLV, on Friday at Eller Media Stadium.
GAME 1: Santa Clara 6 - Southern Utah 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hannah Edwards tossed a three-hit shutout and the offense pounded out 13 hits in the 6-0 Santa Clara victory over Southern Utah (6-5) to kick off the UNLV Rebel Classic.
- Edwards struck out a career-high seven batters and walked just one batter throwing 97 pitches over her seven innings of work to improve to 4-1 on the year.
- All three hits allowed by Edwards were singles as no base runner reached second base.
- The Broncos (5-6) stranded eight runners on base in the first three innings including a pair of bases loaded opportunities but finally broke through in the fourth inning against starter Delaney Baker.
- In the bottom fourth, Morgan Salmon drove in the first two runs of the game on a single through the right side. Abigail Charpentier doubled the lead to 4-0 with a two-RBI single.
- SCU added a run in the fifth to make it 6-0 on Salmon's RBI single, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
- The first five hitters in the Bronco lineup had multi-hit games led by Salmon and Cairah Curran with three hits each.
- Both of Marie Martorella's hits went for doubles.
- Baker (1-1) gave up five runs on nine hits over three innings to take the loss.
GAME 2: Santa Clara 7 - UNLV 6
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (6-6) scored four runs in the final two innings to erase a two-run deficit in the 7-6 comeback win over UNLV (5-4).
- Trailing 5-3 in the sixth, the Broncos loaded the bases against Rebels pitcher Jessie Fontes on a pair of hits and a walk when Leiora Davidson stepped up to the plate and delivered a sharp single to left field to tie the game up.
- SCU re-loaded the bases again and Cairah Curran put the ball in play to bring home the go-ahead run on a ground ball to the shortstop that gave the Broncos a 6-5 lead.
- Taryn Clements added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single to make it 7-5.
- Clements' RBI proved to be the difference as in the bottom of the seventh, the Rebels got to within a run on Jesse Farrell's RBI and had the potential game-tying and game-winning runs at first and second. Charelle Aki hit a sinking liner to left field but a diving catch by Bailey McLaughlin and a throw to second base doubled up the runner to end the game.
- Avery Seva (1-2) picked up her first career win allowing three runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
- Fontes (0-2) took the loss for the Rebels giving up the final two runs.
