FRESNO, Calif. – Tori Kniesche tossed a one-hit gem to out duel Hazyl Gray in South Dakota State's 1-0 shutout victory over Santa Clara softball in the Broncos season opener on Friday at the Fresno State Kickoff Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Kniesche struck out 13 Broncos, walked one, and allowed just one hit, a single to Bailey McLaughlin, to pick up her second win of the season.  The Jackrabbits faced host Fresno State on Thursday in their season opener, walloping the Bulldogs 20-8. 
• South Dakota State (2-0) scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third on Emma Osmundson's RBI double.  Gray struck out the first two batters of the inning but issued a two-out walk to Akayla Barnard before Osmundson's at-bat. 
• Gray (0-1) had a strong outing of her own throwing a two-hit complete game while fanning nine over six frames.  The southpaw also walked four batters.
• Gray was the only other Bronco to reach base, drawing a leadoff walk in the second. 

• 4: Four freshmen - Cairah Curran, Rebecca Rubio, Taryn Clements and Caitlyn "Red" Golob - were in the starting lineup.
• 22: Kniesche faced just 22 batters, one over the minimum over her seven innings of work. 

• Santa Clara faces South Dakota State again at 10 a.m. before taking on host Fresno State at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday.
