SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Coleman Brigman might not quite be ready to head out on the road this weekend.
Â
The graduate student outfielder had himself one heck of a home stand, and closed it out Tuesday with four hits and six RBIs, including a grand slam, as the Santa Clara University baseball team exploded for 14 runs in a 14-9 non-conference win over Columbia at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brigman made his first career grand slam look easy. He lifted a 2-2 pitch deep into left field in the second inning, and the cold breeze did the rest as it hit the roof of the Broncos' hitting facility beyond the wall to make it 5-0. He'd finish the night with a career-high six RBIs and a career-high-tying four base hits. He drove in two more runs in the Broncos' three-run eighth after Columbia (3-8) had walked the bases loaded to start the inning.
Â
- Brigman was hitting .158 on March 2 after going 0 for 5 in the Broncos' 3-2, 15-inning win at Washington. Since then, he's put together a six-game hitting streak. In only the last four games, Brigman has batted .455 (10 for 22) with three multi-hit games. He hit two home runs and two doubles during the home stand when he entered the week with none on the year, and he drove in 10 runs.
Â
- But Brigman was only a part of an impressive offensive output by the Broncos (10-5). Efrain Manzo also homered on Tuesday, hitting a two-run shot in the sixth while he went 2 for 6 with three RBIs. Ben Steck posted his fourth multi-hit game in his past eight appearances, going 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Â
- JonJon Berring continued to cause problems for opponents at the top of the lineup, reaching base four times to extend his reached safely streak to 17 games since last season. He scored three times after drawing three walks, getting a base hit and stealing a base. Jordan Luetzow also reached base four times and scored twice with three walks and a base hit. Santa Clara walked 12 times Tuesday, with nine of them coming home to score.
Â
- Columbia's offense was not to be ignored, though. The Lions scored nine runs (seven earned), the most by a Santa Clara opponent in more than two weeks. They hit two home runs and five doubles, and brought the tying run on deck with the bases loaded in the ninth before Victor Martinez came in to shut the door with a strikeout to earn his first save.
Â
- Columbia's Anton Lazits caused the most trouble for the Broncos, going 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and an RBI.
Â
- Jace Gillmore (2-0) made his third Tuesday start of the year, and it was his best one so far. The freshman threw three shutout innings, only allowing two singles, walking none and striking out three.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 0: Malcolm Williams went 0 for 4 Tuesday, ending his hitting streak at 19 games. He drew a walk in the eighth during his final at-bat, keeping his reached base safely streak alive at 20 games now.
- 4: Columbia committed four errors, which led to seven of the Broncos' 14 runs being unearned. It was the most errors commited by a Santa Clara opponent since Northwestern committed five errors on Feb. 26, 2022, at Schott Stadium.
