Claremont Convergence Ends with One Water Polo Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Santa Clara women's water polo split on the final day of the Claremont Convergence Tournament. They secured a win against Iona, winning 11-10, but couldn't pull it out in their match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, losing 11-4. Chloe Morrison shined as the top performer of the day, scoring three goals across both games.


Game one: Santa Clara 11, Iona 10

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Early in the game, Iona surged ahead, taking a 2-0 lead. Despite the Broncos struggling to score for most of the first period, Annika Burks finally found the net with two minutes remaining. Just as the period seemed to be ending, Malaya Wright scored, narrowing the gap as the Broncos trailed 3-2.

  • During the second period, Chloe Morrison leveled the score at 3-3 with a powerplay goal. Although Iona quickly responded, Sydney Maccabe assisted Megan Chambliss for another goal. Santa Clara then took the lead for the first time with a goal from Maddie Clough, making it 5-4. However, Iona managed to equalize again, ending the half with a 5-5 tie.

  • The first three minutes of the third period were relatively quiet, but in the sixth minute, Iona scored twice, with Evelyn McLaughlin adding another goal, putting the Broncos behind 7-6. Sydney Maccabe then leveled the score at 7-7, only for Iona to reclaim the lead with another goal. However, Libby Slater scored with an assist from Kate Rodman, tying the score for the sixth time at 8-8.

  • As the fourth period began, Iona took the lead again at 10-9, but Chambliss answered, resulting in the seventh and final tie of the game at 10-10. Morrison then put Santa Clara ahead for the second time in the game, leading 11-10 with one minute remaining. This collective effort secured the victory for the Broncos.

  • Liyara Senadheera started in the net and finished with nine saves. 

 

Game two: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11, Santa Clara 4

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara's first action came four minutes into the first period when Morrison scored, but CMS quickly responded. By the end of the first period, the Broncos were trailing 3-1.

  • Libby Slater kicked off the second period by narrowing the gap to 3-2. This proved to be the sole action of the period for both teams.

  • Starting the second half, CMS ran away with the lead and scored three more until McLaughlin dented one, bringing the score to 6-3. The end of the third period was 8-3. 

  • Moynihan was the only Bronco to score in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as CMS secured their lead and win. 

  • Senadheera started and finished with eight saves and one steal.
