Portland Spoils Women's Tennis WCC Home Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Portland defeated Santa Clara women's tennis 5-2, spoiling the West Coast Conference home opener for the Broncos in a match that started an hour late due to rain. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (4-9, 0-2 WCC) got off to a strong start taking the doubles point but lost five of the six singles matches. 
  • The Broncos dropped the first doubles match before winning the next two including the doubles point clincher by JennaMarie Gordon and Velizara Fileva over Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge 7-5 on court one. 
  • Fileva also won her singles match, coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 over Alaia Rubio Perez on court three.  Her win evened the team score at 2-all. 
  • Portland (8-7, 1-1 WCC) picked up the crucial third point when Zelic downed Gordon 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 atop the lineup.
  • The match clincher came on court six from Meagan Pearson.  She defeated Maria Antonova 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
NEXT UP:
  • Santa Clara head to Sacramento State for a nonconference match on Friday.  Match time is 2 p.m.  Should it rain, the match will be played indoors (facility TBD) at 6 p.m.
