Softball Edged by No. 8 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – Santa Clara softball went toe-to-toe against No. 8 Stanford, falling 3-1 in a midweek contest at the Smith Softball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Regan Krause tossed a five-hit complete game while Stanford (28-6) scored a run in the second, third and fifth innings, two of which were aided by Santa Clara errors, to defeat the Broncos 3-1.
  • Trailing by two runs, Santa Clara (20-14) had the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh when pinch-hitter Kyla Acres came to at-bat after Caitlyn Golob walked and Robynn Balmediano singled.  However, Acres struck out swinging for the final out of the game.
  • Krause improved to 11-2 on the year as she allowed one run on five hits, walked two and struck out seven.
  • In the second inning, Jade Berry reached base on an error by second baseman Cairah Curran, stole second and came home on Taryn Kern's RBI single for the first run of the game.
  • Santa Clara answered with a run in the top of the third on a double steal from Balmediano and Curran.  Balmediano led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on Curran's single before stealing home to knot the game up at 1-all.
  • The Cardinal took the lead for good in the home half of the third when Emily Jones tripled home Aly Kaneshiro against starter Hannah Edwards.
  • Stanford added an insurance run in the sixth, aided by another Bronco error.
  • SCU utilized three pitchers and kept the Cardinal lineup in check giving up seven hits, two walks and fanning six.  Only one of the runs was earned.
  • Edwards was the pitcher of record and dropped to 9-3 on the year.
  • Kern, Kyra Chun and Jones each went 2-for-3.
  • Balmediano was the lone Bronco with multiple hits.

NEXT UP:

  • Santa Clara next plays the weekend of April 13-14 in a three-game series at Incarnate Word.
