SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Taryn Clements drove in the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth and Hannah Edwards tossed a four-hit complete game in Santa Clara softball's 2-1 series opening win over Saint Mary's on Friday at SCU Softball Stadium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Clements' RBI single was the difference in the game where Edwards and Gaels starter Odhi Vasquez each went the distance. 
• In the sixth, Santa Clara (23-19, 2-3 WCC) got back-to-back singles from Bailey McLaughlin and Leiora Davidson followed by Clements' single up the middle that scored McLaughlin from second to break a 1-all game.  Davidson had two of the five hits for the Broncos. 
• Edwards (10-5) threw a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up her 10th win of the season.  She threw an economical 87 pitches, giving up one run on four hits and struck out two.  While she hit two batters, she did not issue a walk. 
• The lone run Edwards gave up came in the fifth.  Toru Cervantes hit a one out triple and came home on Camille Lara's grounder to second.  It was the only extra base hit of the game for either teams. 
• The Broncos answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  Cairah Curran hit an infield single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the Gaels catcher before coming home on a passed ball to tie up the game. 
• Vasquez (8-7) was the hard luck losing pitcher for Saint Mary's (23-18, 3-2 WCC) giving up five hits and two runs but with just one earned over six innings.
