Baseball Tames Mustangs in Midweek Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Efficient pitching from a number of underclassmen and several key extra-base hits Tuesday carried the Santa Clara University baseball team to a 4-2 non-conference win over Cal Poly at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Five of the six pitchers who threw Tuesday for the Broncos (22-23) were freshmen or sophomores. Sophomores Sebastian Schreiber and Caden Wooster both threw 1 2/3 shutout innings, only allowing one hit and one walk total in those 3 1/3 frames. Fellow sophomore Henry Stewart only allowed one run in 2/3 innings pitched.

  • Two freshmen finished the job for Santa Clara, with Jace Gillmore only allowing a solo home run in two innings pitched, and Max Bayles earning his fifth save of the year with two shutout, no-hit innings that included three strikeouts. Cade Pilchard (3-2) earned the win with a perfect first inning.

  • It was JonJon Berring's leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning that put the Broncos up for good on the night and put Pilchard in position for the victory. Berring got ahead in the count 1-0 and sent the second pitch Cal Poly starter Charlie Royle (0-1) threw over the right field fence. It was his third leadoff home run of the year and second to lead off the game in the past 10 days.

  • Santa Clara held on to its 1-0 lead for 4 1/2 innings. The Broncos' pitching staff no-hit Cal Poly (28-18) for 4 1/3 innings and had only faced one over the minimum through five innings. Berring helped grow SCU's lead with an RBI double in the fifth, bringing home Coleman Brigman, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Freshman middle infielder Ben Cleary, making his first start at shortstop and batting at his highest spot in the order all year – second – punched a two-run single to left-center field to put Santa Clara's lead at 4-0.

  • That was all the Broncos would need, as the staff only allowed an RBI groundout and the solo homer to Braxton Thomas, with Bayles throwing two perfect innings to close out the game.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 4: Santa Clara had four extra-base hits Tuesday (three doubles, one home run). It had no extra-base hits three weeks ago against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
  • 5: Bayles' five saves in 2024 are tied for the most by a Broncos pitcher in the past eight years. August Souza also had a team-high five last season, and Eric Lex had five in 2018.
NEXT UP
  • Santa Clara closes out the home portion of its 2024 schedule this weekend with a three-game West Coast Conference series against LMU. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
