Men's Soccer and Grand Canyon Play to a 1-all Draw

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer scored a second half goal and played to a 1-all draw against Grand Canyon in the home opener on Thursday evening at Stevens Stadium.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • For the fourth straight match, Santa Clara (2-2-1) fell behind in the first half conceding a goal in the 29th minute.  Jorge Lopez struck the ball beautifully from 25 yards out that barely snuck in the upper right 90 past the outstretched arms of the 6-foot-7 Bronco goalkeeper Jack Stoecker.  
  • It was the lone goal of the first half as Grand Canyon (3-2-1) led 1-0 at the intermission. 
  • Santa Clara broke through with a goal in the 60th minute on Florian Deletioglu's third goal of the season.  Itamar Efrat chipped in the ball just outside the six yard box bouncing off the head of a Lopes defender right to Deletioglu who slotted the ball with his left foot past goalkeeper Leon Schmidt.      
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES: 
  • The series is tied 1-1-1.
  • The Broncos had a 13-8 advantage in shots including 6-3 on frame.
  • Deletioglu had a game high five shots.
  • Schmidt was credited with five saves and two for Stoecker.
