Men's Soccer Drops Home Contest to Sacramento State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Hasan Alsakati converted on a penalty kick in the second half that turned out to be the game winning goal in Sacramento State's 2-1 victory over Santa Clara men's soccer on Thursday night at Stevens Stadium - Buck Shaw Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sacramento State (3-4) was awarded a penalty kick in the 58th minute mark when Baronyi Kengeye fouled Zac Giles on a shot attempt inside the box.
  • Alsakati took the PK and calmly slotted it to the right side while Broncos goalkeeper Jackson Ozburn went the other way for the lone goal of the second half.
  • In the first half, Sacramento State got on the board first in the 14th minute when Stacy Holmes slipped behind the Broncos defense on a nice feed from Axel Raminez and found the back of the net from 18 yards out.
  • Santa Clara (3-3-1) answered three minutes later on Tyler Tipson's equalizer.  He took a Hornet turnover just outside the 18, evaded a defender and shot one to the lower left corner past the diving Hornets goalkeeper Mac Learned.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
  • It was just the third win by Sacramento State in 30 meetings between the two northern California schools with the Broncos holding a 25-3-2 series advantage.
  • The Broncos have conceded the opening goal in the last six matches.
  • Learned made five saves while Ozburn had two.
