No. 10 Women's Soccer Draws With Harvard in Nonconference Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Nonconference play came to an end for No. 10 Santa Clara women's soccer with a 2-all draw against Harvard. The Broncos (6-2-1) took a pair of leads but both times the Crimson (4-0-4) had an answer despite being heavily outshot in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara got on the board in the fourth minute. Sally Menti was taken down in the box and Kat Jordan stepped to the spot to finish low and inside the right post.
  • Harvard evened things up in the 38th off a defensive mistake by the Broncos. A bad pass gave the ball to the Crimson and Irena Heinsdottir Gonzalez found Aslaug Gunnlaugsdottir who hit a perfect shot inside the top right corner.
  • An own goal in the 71st put Santa Clara back on top. A rocket from Marissa Vasquez was saved but bounced off the keeper and then off a defender and into the net.
  • Things were evened up again in the 86th. A ball bouncing in the box saw Gunnlaugsdottir knock it out of the air and into the upper left corner.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara outshot Harvard 26-6. It was 11-3 in the first half and 15-3 in the second half. The Broncos put 10 shots on goal to the Crimson's four.
  • Marlee Nicolos made two saves for the Broncos and came off her line to stop some other scoring chances.
  • One of the biggest reasons Harvard came away with the tie was goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart who made nine saves.
