Men's Soccer Downed By Oregon State in WCC Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Oregon State scored a goal in each half to defeat Santa Clara men's soccer 2-0 in their first appearance as a member of the West Coast Conference on Saturday night at Stevens Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sergi Solans opened the scoring for Oregon State (5-2-2, 1-0 WCC) in the 28th minute on a set piece.  Andrew De Gannes' kick from about 30 yards out curled just outside the six to the far post where Solans one timed it past Santa Clara goalkeeper Jack Stoecker.  It was one of nine first half shots for the Beavers.
  • Oregon State had a chance to double their lead late in the first half off a Bronco turnover but Ellis Spikner's shot was turned away by Stoecker for his lone save of the game.  The game remained 1-0 entering intermission.
  • Aidan Marquez made it 2-0 in the 60th minute slotting the ball low past the outstretched leg of Stoecker on a feed from Fabian Straudi.
  • Santa Clara (3-5-1, 0-1 WCC) got off 11 shots in the second half but were unable to put one past Gandhi Cruz who made five saves.
  • Eight of those shots came after the Broncos had a player advantage in the final 10 minutes of action when Mark Wieder was given a red card after his second caution of the game.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
  • Oregon State now leads the series 2-1-1.
  • Andrew Sullivan made his first start of the season and made his presence felt with a game-high six shots including three on frame.
