Season Opening Win for Women's Tennis Over UC Davis

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis rode the momentum of a close doubles point win to take the first three singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over UC Davis in the spring season opener on Saturday at the Degheri Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • For Santa Clara (1-0), the doubles point came down to a tiebreaker on court one after the teams split the first two doubles matches.  Velizara Fileva and Jillian Roa narrowly defeated Solia Valentine and Polina Marakhtanova 7-6 (7-3) to secure the doubles point for SCU.
  • Securing the doubles point helped buoy the Broncos in singles play as Anna Rahman, Fileva and Tian Yu Dong each won their singles matches to clinch the team win.  Dong dropped the first set but came back to defeat Valentine 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to help clinch the first win of the season for SCU.
  • Dong, Fileva and Jillian Roa each won their doubles and singles matches.
  • UC Davis (0-4) dropped their fourth straight match to open the season but got wins from Penelope Wong on court six and Mika Ikemori atop the lineup.  Ikemori downed Daniella Dimitrova, who was making her Bronco debut after transferring from Baylor, in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9).
  • Second year Bronco head coach Allie Will-Van Alstyne improved to 2-0 in season openers.
