Carlos Stewart Jr. Hits 1,000 Career Points as Broncos Fall at Oregon State

Corvallis, Oreg. - Carlos Stewart Jr. scored his 1000th career point Saturday as Santa Clara men's basketball (14-8, 6-3) dropped a hard fought battle, 83-69, against Oregon State (16-6, 6-3) at the Gill Coliseum. The Broncos trailed for the majority of the game, going on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to one with six minutes left, but were outscored 24-11 in the final stretch. Santa Clara saw five players score in double figures for the sixth time this season and second straight game, as Adama-Alpha Bal led the way with 13 points, tying the team lead with his 17th game of the season in double figures, and 11th straight.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a Carlos Stewart Jr. three pointer, the Broncos went over four minutes without a bucket, allowing Oregon State to open the game up 9-3. A Johnny O'Neil dunk broke the cold streak, and a jumper from Christoph Tilly capped a 6-0 Broncos spurt to tie the game at 15.
  • A 13-3 Oregon State run gave them their largest lead of the half, 30-21, but the Broncos answered, closing the half on a 9-2 spurt after five quick points from Adama-Alpha Bal. They held the Beavers without a bucket for the final four minutes of the half to cut the deficit to two at the break.
  • Oregon State started the second half on a 13-2 run as the Broncos missed six of their first seven shots to open the frame, falling behind 45-32. A trey from Johnny O'Neil and a layup from Brenton Knapper capped a 13-2 Broncos run of their own to cut the lead to one with seven minutes left.
  • Michael Rataj, who led all scorers with 30 points, scored 11 of the next 13 for the Beavers as they went up 11 with three minutes to play. Another trey from Stewart cut the lead to eight, but that's as close as the Broncos would get as Oregon State closed the game outscoring the Broncos 24-11 in the final six minutes, taking the game 83-69.
