Women's Tennis Off to Best Start Since 2011 With Win Over Montana State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis defeated Montana State 4-2 on Saturday morning to make it three straight wins to open the season and are off to their best start since 2011.  The two teams played singles first before the rain came in a neutral site match on the campus of Cal Poly.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Freshman Anna Rahman delivered the clinching victory for the second straight match, defeating Andrea Cuquerella in comeback fashion 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 playing on court five.  
  • Santa Clara (3-0) took the first two matches on courts six and three to take a 2-0 lead.  At six, Juliette Krumholz had a 6-4, 5-0 lead over Mia Ljubas before the Montana State player had to retire.  And at three, Velizara Fileva downed Hudson Hawkins 6-4, 6-2.  
  • Montana State (1-3) made it 2-1 on the team scoreboard when Jojo Bach beat Tian Yu Dong 6-0 3-6, 6-2 on court two.  
  • Jillian Roa pushed the Broncos lead to 3-1 on court four with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Kavya Khirwar.  
  • The last two matches went three sets with Mar Garcia-Reboredo topping Daniella Dimitrova atop the lineup 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 before Rahman's clincher.
NEXT UP:
  • Sunday's match against Cal Poly has been postponed until March 15 due to rain.  The Broncos next play on Friday hosting Fresno State at the Degheri Tennis Center.  First serve is at 11 a.m.
