Women's Tennis Edged Out by Fresno State 4-3

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a feat not seen too often in college tennis, the doubles point clinched the match as Fresno State defeated Santa Clara women's tennis on Friday at the Degheri Tennis Center.  The day's action started with singles play due to the ominous weather forecast.  The singles action was twice delayed - totaling about an hour and a half - due to light sprinkles and finished with each team winning three matches apiece sending the deciding point to doubles play.  The teams split the first two doubles matches before Matilde Magrini and Paulina Montiel clinched the doubles point to give Fresno State a 4-3 victory.  It was the first loss of the season for Santa Clara (3-1), snapping a three match win streak for their best start to the season since 2011.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Playing on court two, Magrini and Montiel downed Daniella Dimitrova and Tian Yu Dong 6-4 to secure the Fresno State (3-0) win.
  • A 6-3 win on court one by Jillian Roa and Velizara Fileva over Andjela Lopicic and Klara Vukiceic earlier sent the match deciding showdown to court two.
  • In singles, after falling 1-0 on the team score, Dimitrova got the Broncos on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Magrini atop the lineup to even things at 1-all.
  • Fresno State (3-0) pulled ahead 3-1 taking the next two matches on courts two and five before the rain came down.
  • Play resumed after about an hour delay with Jillian Roa narrowly defeating Charlotte Gisclon 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (9-7) on court four to close the gap to 3-2.
  • A second rain delay forced a stoppage as Velizara Fileva led Andjela Lopicic 5-7, 6-4, 5-2, right on the brink of knotting the match at 3-all.  After a 30 minute hold up, Fileva took the final set 6-3.
