Diagana's Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Over Seattle

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Simon Diagana tallied the lone goal of the match in the 64th minute to lift Santa Clara men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Seattle for their first West Coast Conference win of the season.  The Broncos came into the match playing a program-record four straight ties including back-to-back scoreless draws in the last two matches as Diagana's goal broke a 267 minute scoring drought.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • On Diagana's goal, Santa Clara (4-2-6, 1-0-2 WCC) took advantage of a loose ball at midfield that Will Wiersdorf picked up and dribbled into the heart of the Seattle defense as the Broncos found themselves 3-v-3 against the Redhawks.  Wiersdorf slipped the ball to the left side where Diagana dropped a shapely chip shot to the far post beyond the reaches of goalkeeper Charlie Lanphier.
  • It was Diagana's second goal of the season since the season opener at Cleveland State.  The assist was Wiersdorf's second of the year.
  • Neither team found much rhythm in the first half as they went into the intermission scoreless.
  • Seattle's (3-4-4, 1-1-1 WCC) best scoring opportunity came in the 54th minute on a set piece.  Off a corner kick, Gavrilo Civric one-timed a shot that banged off the post.
  • Civric had a game-high three shots as the Redhawks outshot the Broncos 12 to 9.
  • SCU keeper Jackson Ozburn was credited three saves for his third straight clean sheet and sixth of the season for the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Week.  Lanphier had one save for Seattle.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
  • The win was Santa Clara's first against Seattle in three matches all-time.
  • Naji Elder saw his first action of the season, playing in the final eight minutes as an extra defender.
