No. 17 Men's Water Polo Battles No. 6 San José State in WCC Affair

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The No. 17 Santa Clara University men's water polo team made a late push Saturday but ran out of time on the road at crosstown rival No. 6 San José State, falling, 11-8, in a West Coast Conference matchup at the Spartans' SRAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The No. 17 Broncos (7-9, 1-2 WCC) rallied to within two in the fourth period after goals from Ashton Brown and Imme van der Schaaf cut the deficit to 9-7, but San José State (7-5, 2-1 WCC) answered and held on in the closing minutes.

  • Santa Clara fell behind 5–1 early in the second, then put together its best stretch — including a power-play by Baird and a five-meter from Engs — to pull within 5–4 at halftime. The Spartans used a three-goal third quarter to re-establish control and held the margin in the fourth.

  • Brown finished with two goals, Riccardo De Simon added two goals and two assists, and van der Schaaf scored twice with an assist. Henry Engs and Luke Baird also scored, and goalkeeper Harrison Labrosse recorded eight saves.

  • Mateja Bosic led San José State with three goals. Brendon Gyapjas made seven saves in goal for the Spartans.
