Women's Basketball Wins Convincingly at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A balanced attack led Santa Clara women's basketball to a convincing 85-62 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday night. The Broncos (2-1) got out to an early lead and never looked back as the Islanders (1-2) defense couldn't slow down the fast-paced attack or get through the tough defense.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara started the game with a 6-0 run thanks to four free throws. After some back-and-forth between the teams, the Broncos scored seven in a row with Ava Schmidt scoring five to get out in front by 11 and would lead 23-13 after the first.
  • Kylee Fox started the second quarter with five straight points to make it a 15-point lead. The Islanders cut the deficit to 11 with a 3-pointer at the four-minute mark, but Santa Clara responded with a 7-0 run over the next 2:10 that was capped by Fox's 3-pointer. Tyler Gildersleeve-Stiles made a steal and went coast-to-coast to close out the first half with her team on top 44-25.
  • The lead got to 20-plus for the first time with 6:39 in the third after a triple by Schmidt followed by a layup from Ashley Hawkins to make it 53-32.  Santa Clara would close the quarter on a 6-0 run and lead 69-43 headed to the final 10 minutes.
  • A 3-pointer from Kate Schat with 5:28 remaining gave the Broncos a game high lead of 31. The Islanders cut in the lead with a 6-0 run to end the game.
 
NOTABLE:
  • Santa Clara shot 47.7-percent (31-of-65) from the floor while going 8-of-29 beyond the arc and 15-of-19 from the free throw line.
  • The Broncos five players reach double figures, led by 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from Sophie Glancey who also had five blocks, one off her career high, and tied a career high with three steals. Fox added 16 points with Schmidt adding 13, Ashley Hawkins scoring 12 to go with six assists and five rebounds, and Delainey Miller scoring 10.
  • Santa Clara's up-tempo offense led to a 17-2 advantage in fastbreak points. The Broncos also picked up 20 assists, 10 steals, and nine blocks.
  • Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot the ball at 37.0-percent (20-of-54) from the field and went 9-of-19 from downtown while struggling at the free throw line, going just 13-of-28.
  • Asha Walker led the Islanders with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from downtown. Samora Watson added 14 points and nine rebounds with Marissa Shelton scored 12.
  • Santa Clara never trailed in the game, and it was tied for just 22 seconds.
