Men’s Soccer Place Six on WCC All-Academic Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference recognized six members of the Santa Clara men's soccer team with All-Academic honors on Thursday.  Will Wiersdorf was named WCC All-Academic First Team while Pierce Dyal, Quinn Garrett, Jackson Ozburn, Khalil Rashad and Jaiden Windell were named honorable mentions.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while participating in at least 50 percent of the completed contests and have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution.

Wiersdorf has a 3.800 GPA majoring in communication to earn one of the 12 spots on the first team.  Normally an 11-member team, this year's first team is 12 members due to a tie in the voting.  The junior midfielder started in all 18 games and finished tied for 10th in the WCC with six goals.  The Danville, California native tallied three assists on the year while logging the second most minutes on the team with 1,574.  This is his second conference All-Academic recognition after being named honorable mention last season.

For the third straight season, Dyal, a senior, was named honorable mention with a 3.700 GPA majoring in economics.  Dyal started in all 18 games this season and logged 1,240 minutes.  He had two assists on the year including on the game-winning goal against UNLV (Sept. 14).

Garrett, a sophomore, has a 3.896 GPA.  He started in 16 of the 17 games he appeared in and saw 1,318 minutes of action.  The defender played the full 90 minutes in 12 matches.

Ozburn has a 3.733 GPA majoring in communication.  The senior goalkeeper was named WCC Defensive Player of the Week three times this season.  Ozburn recorded shutouts against then-No. 11 San Diego who took the league title and against then-No. 5 Portland including a penalty kick save to help snap their 23-match unbeaten streak.  He was named All-WCC Second Team on Wednesday.

Rashad, a sophomore with a 3.635 GPA appeared in nine matches.

Windell has a 3.426 GPA majoring in management.  The redshirt sophomore played in 16 matches and scored two goals and was credited with two assists.
