Stanford Pulls Away Late From Women's Basketball

Box Score STANFORD, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball fell at Stanford on Thursday night by a final of 79-58. The Broncos (1-1) took the lead in the third quarter but the Cardinal (2-0) got hot from behind the arc after that and pulled away in the end.

  • Four free throws for Stanford started the scoring but Santa Clara came right back with an 8-0 run. The Cardinal responded with an 11-2 run to retake the lead and held a 17-12 advantage after the first quarter, with nine of the points coming from the charity stripe. The Broncos were just 4-of-16 from the field in the period.
  • Stanford scored the first seven of the second half to get out front by 12 and after Santa Clara cut into the lead, back-to-back buckets by the Cardinal made it 28-17. Stanford scored the final five of the half and went into the locker room up 33-27.
  • Santa Clara took the lead at the 7:23 mark with a 7-0 run but an 11-2 Cardinal run followed that saw the Broncos down 46-38. Stanford then connected on three 3-pointers in a row to grow the lead out to 15 points before a pair of free throws by Ashley Hawkins to end the period made it a 55-42 game headed to the fourth.
  • The Broncos cut the deficit to single digits with back-to-back buckets midway through the fourth but that was as close as they got, scoring just four points and making one field goal the rest of the way. Stanford used a 12-2 run to close out the game and put some distance in the final score.
