BERKELEY, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis doubles team of Luca Bluett and John Kim are one win away from qualifying for the NCAA Doubles Championship after their quarterfinal win at the ITA Sectional Championships on Friday. The Bronco tandem will have two opportunities to qualify, either with a win in the semifinal round or if they lose in the semis, win the third place match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the quarterfinals, Bluett and Kim defeated UC Irvine's Tal Goodman and Hiroki Sakagawa in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to put them one step away from the NCAA Doubles Championships. They will next face Pepperdine's Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida and Lasse Poertner at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday in the semifinals. In the other semifinal match, which will be played at the same time, Alex Chang and Alexander Razeghi of Stanford will battle UCLA's Rudy Quan and Aadarsh Tripathi.
- Santa Clara also had two singles wins. Alexander Watanabe Eriksson downed de Alemeida in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (13-11) to move to the semifinals of the consolation bracet.
- Kim played in an extra singles match and took care of Max Fardanesh from UC Irvine 6-3, 6-3.
