Broncos Cruise to Big Win Over Pacific

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Pacific's Elias Ralph hit a go-ahead 3-pointer 65 seconds after the opening tip-off Saturday… and that was the last time he and his team would lead.

The Santa Clara University men's basketball team commanded every facet of the game Saturday against the visiting Tigers, going on a 22-5 run two minutes into the game and never looking back en route to a 83-49 blowout West Coast Conference victory at the Leavey Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tyeree Bryan got things going for the Broncos (15-9, 7-4 WCC) at the 18-minute mark, starting their offensive push with a 3-pointer and a layup, five of his eight points in that 22-5 run. Camaron Tongue scored six of his 10 first-half points in SCU's run. The defense also clamped down, forcing four turnovers and nine missed shots from the Tigers (7-18, 2-9 WCC) over an 8 1/2-minute span.

  • Santa Clara extended its lead to more than 20 with a 10-0 run right before halftime. This time, Adama-Alpha Bal got involved with a trey and a layup, with Christoph Tilly adding three points of his own. Four different Broncos scored at least seven points in the first half, led Tongue's 10. Bal and Bryan had eight each and Tilly scored seven before the break.

  • The SCU offense and defense were clicking in the first 20 minutes. The Broncos shot 61.5% as a team in the first half, their second-best percentage to open a game this season. And the 20 points they limited Pacific to in the first half were the fewest points they've allowed in more than four years, since Dec. 2, 2020 when they limited CSU Bakersfield to just 11 points in the first half.

  • Tilly would finish with a game-high 19 points and six rebounds. Tongue scored 14 points with five boards, and Bal had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Elijah Mahi had an all-around performance with six points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.

  • Elijah Fisher led Pacific with 14 points and four rebounds. Ralph finished with 11 points and four boards. Lamar Washington guided the offense with a team-high four assists while also swiping four steals. Pacific shot 31.5% from the floor and 30% (6 for 20) from 3-point range.

  • Santa Clara outrebounded Pacific, 36-26, including a 28-17 advantage on the defensive glass, thanks in part to the Tigers missing 37 shots on their end. The Broncos had 22 assists to Pacific's 10, they had 10 steals and forced Pacific into 15 turnovers, leading to 23 points for SCU. Santa Clara shot 55.4% in the game Saturday, its ninth time this season shooting over 50% in a game.
