Women's Basketball Falls to San Diego

Box Score SAN DIEGO – Santa Clara women's basketball began its final road trip of the regular season with a 63-57 defeat at San Diego. The Broncos (14-13, 8-9 WCC) had a good first quarter, but the Toreros (6-19, 2-14 WCC) responded in the second and were able to hold on to a lead in the fourth.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Eight in a row for Santa Clara gave the Broncos an early lead but San Diego came back with six in a row from Truitt Reilly right after. After exchanging some buckets, Olivia Pollerd scored the final four of the first to give her team a 20-12 lead after the quarter.
  • The Toreros went on an 11-0 run starting early in the second to take their first lead. It would remain within three points the rest of the period and Santa Clara was on top 30-29 at the end of the first half.
  • An 8-0 San Diego run put the Toreros on top by four but they went cold soon after and didn't score for the final 5:13 of the third. The Broncos couldn't take advantage as they went cold as well and got just a 3-pointer from Olivia Pollerd after an almost four-minute drought and found themselves down 41-40 heading into the final quarter.
  • Santa Clara scored seven in a row early in the fourth to take a four-point lead but just after, San Diego rattled off eight in a row to get back up by the same amount.
  • With the Broncos deficit at five, Pollerd connected from downtown with 34 seconds to go but it was the last points they would score and the Toreros converted from the free throw line to ice the game.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara shot the ball at 39.0-percent from the field and went 7-of-29 from downtown.
  • San Diego shot 42.6-percent while going 0-of-6 from beyond the arc.

  • Kylie Horstmeyer led all scorers with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Reilly scored 18 and pulled down 18 rebounds for the double-double.
