SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Behind Hazyl Gray's pitching and timely hitting throughout the lineup, the Santa Clara softball team closed out the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament with an 8-0 run-rule shutout win over Colorado State on Sunday. The Broncos won the last four games of the tournament, three by run-rule, and have been victorious in seven of their last eight games.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gray scattered three hits over five innings and got plenty of offensive help in the third and fourth innings when Santa Clara (7-3) scored all eight of their runs.
- The left-handed hurler faced just 17 batters and gave up a hit in the second, third and fourth innings. She struck out three and did not issue a walk to remain undefeated on the season at 4-0.
- Santa Clara recorded eight hits with half of them going for extra bases. Abigail Charpentier hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to cap off a five run inning for the Broncos against Colorado State (4-6) starter Karlie Cooledge. Lauren Bryson also doubled in a run in the inning.
- With a five run lead, the Broncos added three more runs in the fourth on three hits and aided by three Rams errors.
- Both Charpentier and Clements went 2-for-3 while Kyla Acres, Hope Alley and Lauren Bryson each had an RBI.
- Autumn Rutherford was the lone Colorado State player to get past first base when she hit a triple.
- Cooledge took the loss giving up five runs over three innings.
