Broncos' Season-Opening Win Streak Stopped by No. 17 Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Six different players scored goals Sunday for the Santa Clara University women's water polo team, as the Broncos were handed their first defeat of the 2025 season, 21-6, at the hands of No. 17 San Jose State at SJSU's SRAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara's (2-1) first goal came from Kate Rodman midway through the first period and made it a one-goal game at 2-1, after No. 17 San Jose State (4-5) had scored the first two goals of the game. SJSU would score three more in the period to lead, 5-1, after the first. The Spartans scored six more goals in the second period while shutting out the Broncos to take an 11-1 lead into halftime.

  • The Broncos stepped up in the third period coming out of the break, scoring three goals of their own while limiting San Jose State to only three goals as well. Lia Lakis, Sophia Harvey and Megan Chambliss each scored in the third period for SCU.

  • Libby Slater and Airi Seib scored Santa Clara's final goals in the fourth period. San Jose State added seven more in the fourth to pull away for good. Grace Smith made eight saves in goal for the Spartans Sunday, while Haley Tassell (3) and Fritzi Warneke (2) combined to make five for the Broncos.
COMING UP
