Men's Tennis Downs UC Davis to Win Sixth Straight

SANTA CLARA, Calif. Luca Lemaitre clinched the match for the No. 60-ranked Santa Clara men's tennis team in the 5-2 win over UC Davis on Friday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Leading 3-2 on the team scoreboard, Lemaitre came back from a set down to defeat Kaveh Taheri 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 to secure Santa Clara's (7-3) sixth straight win.
  • The match between the Broncos and the Aggies was a closely contested one from the get go.  SCU narrowly claimed the doubles point at No. 3 where Tiago Boschmans and Valentin Faure grinded out a 7-6 (9-7) win over Perry DiGiulio and Sam De Vries after the two schools split the first two doubles matches.
  • In singles, Santa Clara and UC Davis each took the first set in three matches apiece to continue with the tight match up.
  • Boschmans was the first to finish, beating Ivan Savkin in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 to put the Broncos up 2-0.
  • UC Davis (3-4) got a point at No. 2 where Lucas Bollinger took care of Lukas Maskow 6-4, 7-5 to cut into SCU's lead.
  • At No. 4, Luca Bluett gave the Broncos a 3-1 advantage with a straight set victory over De Vries 6-2, 6-3.
  • The Aggies answered back at No. 6 from DiGiulio who downed Faure 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) to get within 3-2.  The loss by Faure was the first loss the Broncos have incurred at singles No. 3 through 6 spots in the last six matches.  The Broncos are 23-1 at those singles lineup spots during the six match win streak.
  • Lemaitre dashed any hopes for an Aggie comeback with his match clinching triumph.
  • Alexander Watanabe Eriksson and Ryan Torres played out their match at No. 1 with Watanabe Eriksson coming up on top for the final score of 5-2 in favor of Santa Clara.
