Late Run Sinks Women's Basketball at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – A late run lifted Portland to a 73-66 win over Santa Clara women's basketball Saturday evening. The Broncos (14-15, 8-11 WCC) didn't trail for almost 38 minutes, but the Pilots (26-3, 15-3 WCC) went on a run in the fourth and held on for the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • An 11-0 run in the first quarter gave Santa Clara an early 12-point lead. During the run, Portland missed 12 shots in a row. The Broncos would hold an 18-7 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
  • The Pilots got going in the second a bit with a 6-0 run that got them within six midway through the period. Santa Clara would get its lead back up to 10 with under two minutes to go and took a 34-27 lead into the half.
  • The Broncos got their lead back up to 45-33 in the third but a 10-2 run by Portland to close the quarter made it just a 47-43 game after the period.
  • The Pilots tied things up with the first four points of the final quarter before a 9-2 Santa Clara run made it 56-49 with six minutes to go. Portland would get back within one with a quick 6-0 run but the Broncos answered back to go up 62-57 with five minutes on the clock. With the lead at five, a 9-0 run put Portland in the lead for the first time in the game and for good. With 59 seconds to go, Santa Clara got within two, but the Pilots converted from the free throw line to ice the win. The Broncos missed their final seven shots from the field while Portland was 4-of-4 to close out the game.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara shot 34.8-percent from the field while going 7-of-28 from deep.
  • Portland shot it at 37.0-percent and was 7-of-22 from beyond the arc.
  • The Broncos had a good day from the free throw line going 11-for-12 but the Pilots finished with 26 makes in 32 attempts.
  • Olivia Pollerd led four scorers in double-figures with 15 and added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Kaya Ingram scored 12 with Alana Goodchild and Maddie Naro adding 10 each.
  • Alexis Mark scored a game-high 23 while going 10-of-12 from the free throw line and adding 11 rebounds. Maisie Burnham scored 17 and Emme Shearer scored 13.
